The history of the New York colony
Did you know that the duke of York originally founded our colony in 1626. 1638, Peter Minuit settles New Sweden. 1664, the Dutch lose New Amsterdam which is renamed New York. 1664, King Charles totally ignored any Dutch claims and gave the entire country to his brother, James, the Duke of York.
And if you thought that was interesting, then there's a lot more where that came from! The New York colony was founded for trade and profits. We have a mild climate with warm summers and mild winters. And we have good farm land that's perfect for growing crops and tobacco. Soon we had a lot of money because we had really rich soil because of the tobacco plants and crops. We came here for religious freedom from our king.
(New Sweden: the original name for New York)
